When I lived in Philadelphia some years ago, I used to take the elevated train (The El) from the northeast into center city. About mid way through the streaming landscape there is a portion of the city that is totally dilapidated with run down buildings, empty trashy lots and abandoned factories from a deflated industrial boom. This was essentially the ghetto, all in all it was a pretty bleak thing to look at. But here and there I could spot glimpses of color & form . Seemingly other worldly things, with a life apart from their surroundings; infused with the life of the people that made them.
